October 29th, 2008. One Wicked Wednesday.

I don’t know what normal people do on a Wednesday evening in late October. I can only speak for 65 plus slightly certifiable, mildly chilled and slightly shaken runners that spent a little time chasing the GLORY that we call the “D5K”

First off, Many thanks to Mike Toomey and all the Wicked Runners who came down to run with us, bringing with them fast times and first class attitudes.

Tonight was a night of Records, and record breaking. A record in attendance, with 65 runners. A record of first time runners at 26, and a new female course record, to boot.

October 22nd, 2008

Short and Sweet. My apologies on not being able to get to writing this post earlier. I wake up it’s Wednesday, I blink it’s Sunday, and some where in between I find myself here typing and krooked. Comforted only by the cold grip of a fresh Ipswich Ale.

Anyway, lets flashback to Wednesday evening, as I recall it was a bit…dare I say chilly. 31 eager runners waiting in the cold, dressed like it was warm. Comforted only by the warm lonnnnnnng winded breaths of our fearless pontificator Liam Brady. “GO” says the guy with timer, and we embark on yet another course record setting evening.

Among the ranks of our faithful regulars, were 3 First Timers, and 2 Personal Records, one of which happens to be the new female course record. They are as follows:

First Timers:

Tom Keith.        24:37

Kelley Tobyne.  28:14

Naomi Gray.      29:02

Personal Records:

Joseph Miles.        20:22

Crystal Anthony.  18:18. New Female Course Record.

Special thanks to Sean Cody for doing a magnanimous job handing out the Popsicle sticks, and of course putting a roof over our heads, and cold pints in our hands.

Stone Tower Trail Run on 10/26

It wasn’t enough for Liam Brady to start-up our incredibly successful Danvers 5k Fun Run. Now he’s organized the Stone Tower Trail Run Challenge, a 15k and 5k trail race taking place this weekend in Lynn.

More from Liam:

I was halfway through one of my long Sunday morning training runs when I spotted the flyer that told of the Stone Tower Restoration project. A large portion of the funding had been acquired by the FLW (Friends of Lynn Woods), but more was needed to complete work on this majestic tower. It is located on Lynn’s highest hill in the Lynn Woods Reservation, and was once open to visitors, offering scenic views of the woods and the surrounding area.

I had in the past ascended the spiral stairs towards the roof, climbing over missing stairs, living just a little dangerously. But the access has long been closed for the protection of the public, and now, with a little help from our friends, can be restored and reopened.

This is where you can be helpful and participate towards this goal.

On Sunday, October 26, come join your fellow runners and walkers to benefit this cause.

Find out more at the Stone Tower Trail Run website.

Runner Profile: Kevin Collins

How long were you in the Middle East for?

I was in the Middle East for 9 months.

When did you come home?

I deployed Oct 2007, and came home in late June 2008.

What was the experience like?

I was in several countries over there but the most rewarding mission that I was involved in was training Iraqi Marines to defend their Oil Platforms (the Platforms are probably the biggest asset the country has to get their economy back on it’s feet and that makes them a prime target for suicide bombers…they have been attacked before).  We also played a part in the VBSS (visit, board search and seizure) of Iraqi (and other country I cannot say…) fishing boats (dhows) for weapons, smuggled oil, drugs, people (held against their will, or known terrorists) etc.  I felt like I was making a difference for the future of Iraq training the Iraqis and that is why I liked that mission so much.  The experience was once in a life time (well, maybe two if I go again…haha) and it made me realize how lucky we are to live in the country that we do…after seeing how some people live and what their day to day life is like there was no doubt that we live in the greatest country in the world.

Where are you originally from?

I grew up In Beverly.

Where did you go to high school/college?

I moved to Topsfield when I started high school (Bishop Fenwick) and played football there.  After that I went to North Shore Community College and received an Associates in Business and after that went to Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston for a Bachelors Degree in Engineering.

Are you married/engaged?

I am single (I have my eye out though…haha!)

Do you have any children?

I’ve never been married and I don’t have any kids.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I’m at the gym (the former Gold’s) or over at Cross Fit in Beverly (Dave should pay me for that free advertisement…lol) or swimming a the Danvers YMCA.  My passion is surfing and contrary to popular belief in this area we do actually have surfable waves here.  I surf through the winter, that’s when the good waves show up and have traveled to Hawaii and Costa Rica on surf trips…I also have a brother in California and I surf when I visit him.

How long have you been running?

I was never a big runner, meaning I wouldn’t just go for a run but playing sports I had to run.  It wasn’t until I joined the military that started running on a regular basis.  I like it and I really like the Danvers 5k because not only do I get some exercise in but also a chance to meet some great people.

October 15, 2008

Fun, fun, fun. Run, run, run. Both were in abundence this evening. So the first person I see tonight is Danny Chick, and after a friendly hello, he tells me to get ready for a new course record. Apparently Danny had brought down a “Ringer” We’ll see, is the obvious inner response going off in my head, and see I did. Another member of the Chick family, Doug chick certainly did set a new course record. With a 17:05, which is seven seconds faster than the previous record, that stood for probably a whopping two weeks. Also this was Doug Chicks first run with us, not a bad way to start.

We had 4 First Time runners, and an impressive 8 Personal Records that made up the 36 runners that showed up and let it all hang out in the name of Good Health…and of course Ice cold pints of BEER. Hooray for Beer.

Our First Timers:

Doug Chick        17:05

Mike Toomey     17:25

Richard Fay        25:14

Jim Jordan          25:16

Personal Records:

James DeLucca       18:47

Kevin Collins          22:52

Dan Keith               23:00

Gregg Crean           23:03

Jamie Perkins         23:37

Mark Jones             24:04

Kelly Reardon         27:48

Jackie Hutchinson    27:54

We had some old faces show back up to run with us this week. Jared Keohane swaggered back in this week, and did not forget to bring his sparkling confident personality with him. Jen Howland is back on the boards this week. She has been a real trooper in dealing with an annoying injury that just kept lingering around like the creepy guy at the party.

I must make mention of JOHN BOSSE. For those of you who do not know John, he is the guy who is always smiling, and emits positive energy. Well young Johnathan wanted change. Sounds easy enough a request, change, we change all the time, our minds, our attitudes, or socks…with any luck. This change however is different. John wanted Life change, he, like so many others longed to see “what was out there” wanted to try, see, do, taste, NEW. This is a longing that resides inside of most of us, the unfortunate truth is, most of us never act on it. Contentment prevails.

John decided to act on his desire, rising above the comforts of routine and putting the unknown, both within himself and of the real world to the test. In this simple decision lies the seed of all success, and with that knowledge of self John has already succeeded.

So on behalf of myself and the D5K, we wish John all the best, and thank you for adding your great personality to the fabric of the Danvers 5K Fun Run.

I will not subject any of you to my rambling thoughts for very much longer, that is of course to assume anyone is still reading this at this point. We have a great crowd, you are a great crowd, I will use this last paragraph to single out one among us for a little spotlight time.

“MIKE COLE” oh yah buddy, your the MAN, and everybody should know it. I have a special D5K sticker just for you. “We are all about the LOVE”welcome to the love run

The 8th day of the 10th Month in the 2,008th year of recorded time.

Another great evening for a run. With a group of 38 brave souls pushing there bodies around the mean streets of Danvers for the GLORY that is the “D5K”

Kudos out to Crystal Anthony for coming in first overall “again” and setting a new female course record, previously held by: Crystal Anthony. With a time of, 18:27.

Danny Chick was obviously in a teaching mood, schooling almost everybody by being the first male finisher with a time of, 18:46. No wonder Jared hasn’t been back.

We at the “D” welcome the 5 first time runners that joined our ranks.

Rich Horgan - 25:56

Greg Gagnon - 30:15

Kelly Reardon - 30:46

Travis Reardon - 35:42

Jeanne Wral - 36:54

As well, shoes off to this weeks personal record makers.

Matt adams - 20:50

Tim Goulter - 23:54

Greg Lynch - 25:03

Christina Nawn - 25:12

Brooke Drosdowicz - 26:26

Thanks to T.R. Ramsdell again for helping with the “oh-so” glamorous job of handing out the popsicle sticks, and for donating 2 full bags of canned goods for the local food bank. As well as thanks to everyone else who donated some stuff.

Thanks and we will see you all next week. In closing, if you are so inclined to keep reading, I will leave you with a running dream I had. Picture, if you can, yourself running a marathon in the 1940’s in front of the White House. OK? Good. Now picture all the runners in that Marathon, now picture that all those runners in that Marathon “Are You” It’s you, running against hundreds of, you. What would that look like? Of course in dreams we find situations like this to be somehow easily acceptable. Regardless of how slightly off camber they may be with there content. The problem with dreams, is that we cannot visually share them with others, like say we can a photograph, but it would cool if we could. Someday.

maybe today. Click.

October First Two Thousand Eight

I am not a Philosopher, at best, sometimes a drunken savant. Regardless, there is, to me an undeniable purity in the air at this time of year. The feel, the smell, the colors, natures grand finale so to speak. It is a great time to run.

To stay with the word Purity for a moment, I feel running is one of the purest things we as humans can do. It requires no gyms, no equipment, no memberships. I often jump back to the “why” why do we run? I suppose these days we run for our health. Running is good for you, It helps you live longer. Lets take it a step further. Rewind the clocks, oh I don’t know…lets go Paleolithic Era. Humans ran then too. However I suppose they ran for different reasons, or maybe not so different. I suppose they ran for health and to live longer as well, but on more of a predator/prey level. Us humans sometimes being the prey, thus in order to survive we ran, not being eaten by a large animal is great for ones health. So when you find yourself on the wild tundra of modern suburbia, watch out for what lurks behind the local shrubbery, it could just be a sabretooth woodchuck looking for a fast meal. Run…run like your life depends on it, because at one time it did.

Alright, Back to business. A special thanks this week to T.R. Ramsdell for helping out the run and handing out all the popsicle sticks in proper sequential order. D5k Welcomes first time runner Jackie Hutchinson. Jackie ran a 28:59, and did not get lost. Good stuff. Overall winner this week was Crystal Anthony with a time of 18:48. Which is an incredibly impressive time, unless you compare it to her course record setting time last week. We had four personal records this week and they all finished one after another. We will start with Joe Miles with a 20:41, Brian Drozdowicz with a 21:02, Ben Goodhue with a 21:10, and Tim Goulter with a 21:11. Very respectable times.

So thanks to the 42 of you who decided to spend a little time with us Wednesday evening, and keeping with our long tradition of being human and running away from large hairy animals that want to eat us.
